UK Sweep the Board in Istanbul

MILCOMP Land Obstacle Course 2008CIOR's Military Competition (MILCOMP) is a true test of combat effectiveness and once again the UK have proven their mettle. The squad took the lion's share of the medals in Istanbul last week against 49 teams (147 competitors) from 17 countries.

The internationally recognised annual MILCOMP tests a range of military skills and provides an opportunity to develop advanced leadership, courage and physical fitness. It also incorporates the benefits of intercultural experience and friendship amongst the reserve forces of NATO and its partners.

The three-day team competition consists of pistol and rifle shooting, land and water obstacle courses, military navigation (orienteering) and skills such as distance judging, grenade throwing, first aid and a Law of Armed Conflict test.

Competitors are divided into Novice, Experienced, Veteran and Female categories and the scoring is biased towards shooting, then navigation and then the obstacle courses. Team reserves can participate in mixed nationality teams in the International category.

MILCOMP Water Obstacle Course 2008This year the UK saw success in every event, with the largest medal haul going to "Team Testosterone" (comprising brothers 2Lt Mannix Devlin and O/Cdt Malik Devlin, and O/Cdt James Howard) who won the Obstacle course, the Experienced category and came second overall. "Team Intense" won the Orienteering competition and came second in the experienced category. Major Andy Mason, the UK team coach, also took home a medal as part of an International team.

The full results are listed below. Training for the 2009 competition in Sofia (and the elusive Overall prize) begins in the Autumn in Aldershot.
